Happy New Year and welcome back to school! This is the stretch where we see tremendous learning occur. Unfortunately it is also winter, and with winter comes the potential for closures or delayed starts. Late starts and school closures include extensive planning and communication in determining safe transportation routing for our students.
Our transportation supervisor is out on the roads early to evaluate road conditions for buses and cars. School bus drivers are trained professional drivers and are prepared for winter road conditions, however freezing temperatures can play havoc with diesel fuel and may need additional time for warming up. Our facilities director evaluates the plowing and snow removal needs for each building to determine if we can start school on time.
Finally we consult with area superintendents and make decisions based on weather reports and individual situations for each district. It may not be the same for each district, however all districts consider student safety as the priority. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at your convenience. - Laure Quaresma
If school is delayed or closed, the information is posted by 6:00 AM on:
- District Website
- District Facebook page
- Automated calling system
- Regional media outlets (newspaper online, radio, Portland & Tri-Cities tv stations)
If no notice is posted, school is running on regular schedule.
The location with the most accurate information to confirm a delay/closure is on the district website. On occasion, media inaccurately reports school delay/closure information.
If schools must close early, notification is given using the same method.
