1959 McEwen Football Team
the 1959 McEwen football team was the first McEwen team to go to the state playoffs
during this year, only the league champions advanced to state
thirty boys were on the team, including fifteen returning letterman
the team averaged almost 30 points, while giving up an average 12 points per game
they were champions of District 7B with an undefeated league record
in the state quarterfinals, the Scotties defeated the strong, undefeated Wallowa Tigers 25-6
in the semi-finals, McEwen lost to the eventual state champions, St. Mary's of Medford
two players from the team, Larry Whitney and Dave Hesp were chosen for the Shrine All-Star Team with Harry Brown as an alternate
on additional story, not on any stat sheets but equally important is a tragic one
the team suffered a major setback when sophomore Richard McCracken was accidentally killed in a shooting accident early in the season
the season was dedicated to his memory and until that point it was the best season in history
