1962-1963 Boys Basketball Team
First basketball team to ever represent the school at the state tournament which was held that year in Bend
Ten of the players graduated from college with seven of them lettering in different sports at the college level
Coached by: Cloyd Duncan and Jim Nibler, manager was Delmar Zounar
The Scotties dominated league play and took the league championship with a 20 win 2 loss record
they averaged 61.4 points a game while holding their opponents to 45 points
they outscored their opponents on the average of over 16 points per game (and remember this was many years before the 3 point line was created
the team qualified for state by winning the district tournament in Pendleton defeating Mr Vernon 60-47 and Ione 55-44 avenging a four point loss in league play
in the district final, playing before a sold-out crowd in the Pendleton Armory, McEwen defeated Riverside 52-34 advancing to the state tournament for the first time in school history
they lost in a heart breaking defeat 50-49 to Lowell, the #1 ranked team in the state ~ as sports writers wrote in the paper the next morning "if these two teams played ten times, the record would probably be 5-5"
the next two days of tournament for the next two teams went as expected, Lowell went on to go undefeated and win the state title and McEwen won their next two games and placed fourth
the team brought home their first ever state basketball trophy as well as the coveted Sportsmanship Trophy for the tournament
Overall the season record was 25-3, one of the best ever
Two team members were placed on the all-tournament team: Bob McMillan and Mike Shields
