Letter from Interim Superintendent

November 2, 2021

Dear Athena-Weston Families:

Friday, October 29th marked the end of our first quarter of school. I want to thank all of you for
your support of our primary objective: to open schools ON-TIME and IN-PERSON this fall. With your help, our district not only opened on time to in-person learning, but also has not closed any building or moved any grade level to online learning. Our amazing staff has worked relentlessly this quarter to re-establish school and classroom routines and a sense of normalcy for our students. With our community firmly and positively behind us, our district has been able to do the following in only nine weeks after nearly a year of school closure:

● Open on-time and in-person
● Remain open at all grade levels
● Re-establish routines and expectations for students
● Implement increased social emotional support for students in all buildings
● Conduct academic assessments to determine student strengths and areas of need
● Reinstate fall athletics in grades 6-12 with spectators in attendance
● Take students on field trips
● Re-establish Homecoming Week at the high school
● Plan Halloween activities for elementary and middle school students
● Reconvene Athena Elementary PIE, Weston Middle School Parent Group, and WMHS
Parent Advisory Group meetings
● Host School Picture Days in every building
● Induct the 2020 Hall of Fame
● Schedule Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences

Although challenges continue, I am hopeful and encouraged because I see every day, through
hundreds of ordinary acts of kindness and support, just how extraordinary our district and
community are. I am proud to be an employee of the Athena-Weston School District, the parent
of two Weston McEwen graduates, the supervisor of an extraordinary staff, and the building
principal of amazing middle school students. I am proud to serve the Athena Weston School
District every day, and I personally thank you for your role in helping us to get our kids back to
where they need to be: IN SCHOOL, IN PERSON.

Sincerely,
Ann Vescio, Interim Superintendent
