Tomorrow's trip to Bluewood has been canceled and rescheduled to Monday, March 3rd. We appreciate your understanding.

The Athena-Weston School District values our long-standing athletic partnership with Helix's Griswold High School and the opportunities that our cooperative agreement has provided for student-athletes in our area. Weston-McEwen High School is disappointed by the recent decision of the OSAA Ad Hoc Committee to reclassify our athletic program to the 3A level in order to maintain our cooperative agreement with Griswold High School. The enrollment calculation used by the OSAA puts WM/Griswold football slightly over the established 2A cutoff. Both Districts worked hard to advocate for our student-athletes and submitted a request for an exception to the OSAA Executive Board. Unfortunately, the request was denied. While we value our partnership with Griswold, we do not believe that moving to a higher classification is a safe or logistical best fit for our students at this time.
As a result of this decision, Weston-McEwen regretfully announces that we will be dissolving our cooperative agreement with Griswold High School in order to remain at our current 2A classification. This is not a decision we make lightly, as our collaboration with Griswold has been beneficial to both schools and our athletes. It is disheartening to lose the connections with teammates that have been a part of our shared programming.
We remain hopeful that in the future, we may be able to revisit this partnership under more favorable circumstances. Our priority is and always will be the well-being and success of our student-athletes, and we will continue to advocate for their best interests as we move forward.

Students in the district enjoyed the sounds of Native drumming and the sights of colorful, traditional dancers from Nixyaawii Community School at the Tribal Dance Showcase on Friday, November 15th. The district-wide event is an annual tradition held at Weston-McEwen High School. Read the article: https://www.athwest.k12.or.us/article/1895617

WMHS Band News:
We appreciate the enormous support of our AWSD community for the Weston-McEwen High School band. As you are aware, we are in a transition year to a brand new band director, and we regret to inform you that the WMHS band will be unable to march in the Pendleton Round-Up Westward Ho Parade on Friday. We plan to be back in 2025! While we share in the disappointment, we are thrilled that several of our band members will participate in a football pep band. Additionally, our new band director is excited to showcase a special Pipes and Drums presentation during halftime at the Homecoming football game. Please come out and support our band students and our new band director. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at Homecoming!

Attention River Route and Mountain Route Families: A reporter from the Oregon School Boards Association will be visiting our district on, Wednesday, April 3rd and, Thursday, April 4th to write a story about our district’s long, rural bus routes. His name is Jacob Arnold. He has been given permission to ride the River Route on Wednesday afternoon and the Mountain Route on Thursday morning so that he can experience our rural routes first hand for his story. Mr. Arnold will be wearing a visitor’s badge and has passed a background check. He will ride the bus near the drivers. It is possible that Mr. Arnold will talk with some students about their experiences on long, rural bus routes. If you do not wish for Mr. Arnold to talk with your child, please let your child’s bus driver know prior to Wednesday afternoon, either verbally or with a note. We're celebrating 50 Years as TigerScots!
In 1973, the Athena and Weston schools embarked on a trial merger of the junior high and high school systems, bringing two close rivals together. Grades seven, eight, and nine were taught in Weston, while grades ten, eleven, and twelve were taught in Athena. The merger resulted in the formation of the Weston-McEwen Tigers and Scots. This experimental merger was closely watched statewide, as it offered a potential solution to the financial challenges faced by other small schools. The positive attitude of the students played a significant role in the merger's success. Faculty found the transition smoother than anticipated, partly due to the students' cooperative approach. The collaboration between the parents and citizens of both towns was crucial to the merger's success. Students benefited from new additions such as a student lounge and a hot lunch program. The larger student population allowed for increased competition, individual activities, and club involvement. The merged school became one of the larger institutions in its league, presenting more opportunities for curriculum enhancement and student engagement.
With the beginning of the 23-24 school year, we want to highlight this milestone. The AWSD is proud of our 50 years of cooperation and growth. Thanks for being a part of our community!
